Finca Villa Betulia is located in the Colombian region of Huila and is managed by Luis Anibal Calderon together with his family. Over the years, Luis has specialized in the production of high-quality specialty coffees and experiments in particular with different processing methods. As early as 2016, he was one of the 30 finalists in the renowned Huila Best Cup competition. This coffee is an anaerobically processed Natural of the Colombia variety. After selective harvesting of fully ripe coffee cherries, a 25-hour fermentation follows before the cherries are slowly dried for an average of 25 days in a covered parabolic dryer. The result is an intense, multi-layered cup profile with notes of dark chocolate, dried berries, stewed cranberries, and fine vanilla. A distinct acidity reminiscent of fermented fruits meets a soft, restrained sweetness.
The story of Finca Villa Betulia begins with a small piece of land that Luis Anibal Calderon received as a gift from his father. Since then, he has gradually expanded the farm and continuously developed his cultivation and, in particular, his processing methods. Today, he manages the finca together with his family, who are closely involved in the various work steps. The farm is located near Acevedo in Huila, at an altitude of around 1,450 meters. This region in southwestern Colombia stretches between the central and eastern ranges of the Andes and is one of the most important coffee-growing areas in the country. Different altitudes, climatic conditions, and harvest cycles shape the diversity of the coffees produced here. Also characteristic of Huila is the smallholder structure: around 80 percent of coffee farms manage less than three hectares of land. Luis focuses on a careful selection of ripe coffee cherries and controlled processing. For this Natural, the cherries are first dry-fermented for 25 hours and then dried for about 25 days in a parabolic dryer. The Colombia variety is grown, a crossbreed developed by the Colombian research institution Cenicafé; introduced in 1985, it was originally designed for high productivity and resistance to disease. The coffee is exported via the producer-led company Genesis and reaches Europe via Cafe Imports Europe. This allows this microlot to be traced back to Finca Villa Betulia and Luis Anibal Calderon.
Almost all of our coffees are traceable back to the farm. We work with importers and producers who share our values and place a high priority on transparent origin information and long-term partnerships.
We always buy our coffee seasonally. Our range changes several times a month to always roast the freshest beans. We want each coffee to highlight the specificity of its terroir.
Roasting is a craft and that's how we practice it. Our roasting team around the German Roastmaster of 2018, Kilian Seger, invests a lot of time in profile development and quality control.
