The coffee grows in Sul de Minas – the southernmost region of the Brazilian state Minas Gerais. Due to its location and climate, it is Brazil’s most important coffee-growing region, accounting for around 70% of the country’s Arabica cultivation. Average temperatures range between 17–24 °C, making it nearly ideal for Arabica. Fazenda Passeio is one of the larger farms in the region. It’s been family-owned for four generations, with Adolfo Henrique Vieira Ferreira at the helm. He puts strong emphasis on the well-being of his workers – offering bonuses, supporting infrastructure for families, and encouraging further training. Because most of the farm’s terrain is sloped, no harvest machinery can be used. That means the coffee cherries are handpicked – unusual for Brazil – but Adolfo is convinced that the extra effort pays off in quality.
